The Lion in Winter Ball is the biggest event in our social calendar, taking place during the first weekend of March. It is a decadent 12-hour event with over 700 attendees from the College, from all three of the common rooms. The evening consists of a wide range of activities and entertainment, including a delicious 3 course meal, a Ceilidh, and live music throughout the night from sought-after acts. Whilst steeped in tradition, the ball is also constantly evolving and we have a number of exciting plans for the 2016 event to make it the best one yet.

The 2016 Lion in Winter Ball will only build on the successes of previous balls. The theme has been kept a secret this year, ensuring a greater buzz both in college and amongst the livers out as they are given but a few clues to keep them guessing until Hatfield’s iron gates are opened on the fourth of March!
The Committee organising this fantastic event is made up solely of students. The team incorporates all year groups, bringing the Hatfield community together in order to create a night that offers something special for every Hatfielder. The fabulous menu that we have created this year - specifically designed with our secret theme in mind - will be the start of an amazing evening for Dining guests. The less expensive Ents tickets offers the other years a chance to attend the rest of the evening with a wide range of acts that last year included the sensational IAmBeyonce and Hatfield’s own talented jazz band Kinky Jeff. Moreover, this year we have created a formal audition process for the Ball’s entertainment which we hope will ensure we discover the best university-wide talent, not only musical acts but also drama, opera, and other entertainment, all of which will be of an extremely high quality.

The Lion in Winter Ball is also a fantastic chance for college to get involved with the wider Durham community. Hatfield students have a great opportunity to interact with local cafés and small businesses to gain sponsors for the Ball. The Lion in Winter Ball really brings the whole of college together, it’s a remarkable achievement of the Hatfield students who organise it, as well as those attending, to ensure it is such a fantastic and fun-filled night which 700 Hatfield students - the majority of the College’s members - can enjoy every year.

More details about the Ball will be announced during the coming weeks and months as the night starts to take shape, so keep checking back to find out more.
